A closer encounter of the third kind

Article Abstract:

Many people assume that it is necessary to have a telescope to view a comet. However, this is not the case at all. The best way to view Comet Hale-Bopp, for example, which is already visible and will be very bright in the northern hemisphere in late Mar and early Apr 1997, is with a pair of binoculars. It is best to buy a pair which is about 7x50 or 10x50, as more powerful binoculars are too heavy to hold. The Russian-made Hellos brand, which starts at around 50 pounds sterling, is worth considering, while Halina and Pentax models cost around 100 pounds sterling.

City slickers take to the land

Article Abstract:

The Willing Workers On Organic Farms (Wwoof) scheme has 2,000 members in Britain, along with others in France, Italy, Portugal, Israel, Spain, Argentina and Ghana. Operating on an informal basis, it gives volunteers the opportunity to experience rural life by working for a few days on an organic farm, where a large amount of labour is always required. In return, the volunteers receive free food and accommodation. Volunteers do not need to have particular skills, but must be able to work extremely hard.

Songs to raise the dodo from the dead

Article Abstract:

David Hindley was head of music at Homerton College, Cambridge, England, for 23 years until he took early retirement in 1985, which he spends studying recordings of birdsong. He re-creates birdsong with a Yamaha FY-77 synthesiser linked to a Macintosh FX with a Finale programme. The International Council for Bird Preservation set up the 'Lifesong' project to collect recordings of threatened bird species as 100 have been lost since 1692 and another 1,000 species are under threat.
