A powerful indictment of the Eighties

Article Abstract:

The gap between the rich and the poor in the UK has widened over the last 10 years, according to a report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. This trend is also being seen in other countries, but has developed more rapidly in the UK than anywhere else in the industrialised world except New Zealand. The report recommends action in nine areas, including housing policy, benefits, training and support for marginalised areas, in order to deal with this problem. However, progress will not be made until a wide-reaching change in attitudes is achieved.

Ministers prepare for project bids worth 14bn pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Private Finance Initiative (PFI), which is designed to bring private finance into public sector projects, has been criticised for causing delays in capital projects and for very high bidding costs for the private sector. However, the Private Finance Panel has now identified more than 1,000 potential schemes worth 25 billion pounds sterling. The revenue costs of the services purchased could amount to 40-60 billion pounds sterling over the lifetime of these projects.
