A glimmer of hope in Africa's slide away from freedom

Article Abstract:

Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi has managed to keep the media, courts and the police under firm control. There is strong evidence for widespread corruption in Kenya, with political prisoners and criminal suspects being routinely tortured, according to Amnesty. A similar disregard for democracy is also seen in a considerable number of other African countries. In Kenya, the main problem has been that the opposition has failed to coordinate its activities against the corrupt regime. However, South Africa shows that the politics of opposition can be successful in Africa.

The Pope's last crusade

Article Abstract:

Pope John Paul II has instigated a strong campaign against capital punishment, aiming for a worldwide moratorium on state executions by the end of the 20th century. He has had some success in influencing state governors in the US on this matter, and has also discussed it in private with President Bill Clinton. The Catholic Church has until relatively recently regarded the death penalty as an unpleasant necessity, but Pope John Paul II, with his very strong sense of the inviolability of life, has come to believe that the death penalty can no longer be justified.
