A man-reader in Malgudi

Article Abstract:

Indian author R K Narayan, 86, sets a lot of his tales in the imaginary city with Malgudi, southern India. His style is simple and brief, he edits half of what he originally wrote. He reduced the Mahabharata 100,000-stanza epic to a few pages. Narayan, son of a teacher, grew up in Madras, Bangalore and Mysore. When he was in his twenties, he sent his writings to Indian publishers and, in 1935, to London publishers, without success. The manuscript of 'Swami and His Friends' ended up on Graham Greene's desk. He helped find publishers and they corresponded for 50 years.

Thailand's new temptations

Article Abstract:

The recent murder of British tourist Johanne Masheder in Kanchanaburi, north-west Thailand, has damaged the country's reputation as one of the safer destinations for tourists in Asia. The fact that the crime was carried out by a novice Buddhist monk has caused particular controversy. Thais are extremely religious, and have therefore been greatly shocked by another indication of corruption among the country's 200,000 monks.

Soldiers who humbled US have little to celebrate

Article Abstract:

Vietnam fought very hard to free itself from French, and then US, influence, but is now becoming increasingly westernised. Corruption and black marketeering are common in Ho Chi Minh City, and the government has allowed the US to reoccupy its embassy building. It may now re-establish diplomatic links with the US within the next year.
