A quiet revolution in Wapping

Article Abstract:

A number of small changes have been made to the Sunday Times newspaper, which holds 47% of the UK market for quality Sunday newspapers. This newspaper's performance has remained very stable, and it has not been required to make the dramatic changes seen at other newspapers. It has been wise enough to stick to a successful format, one which is now extensively imitated. The decision to move the editorial and opinion pages into the main news section indicates that the newspaper is moving away from its approach of offering a mix-and-match package to fulfill many different interests.

Lesson number one: don't sack your readers

Article Abstract:

The new editorial team at The Express will face significant challenges. The newspaper's circulation has declined to 1.2 million copies a day, compared with almost 2.3 million copies a day for the Daily Mail, its main rival, and its future seems uncertain. It is clear that The Express cannot merely dismiss the Daily Mail, which is successful because it is seen as confident and having close links with its readers. The Express must learn valuable lessons from the Daily Mail, taking care to constantly reinvent itself for existing readers and then add to its readership.

Why the 'Observer' isn't working

Article Abstract:

Circulation of the Observer newspaper has fallen to 400,000, from 500,000 when it was purchased by the Guardian from Lonrho group in 1993. Linking the Observer and the Guardian initially appeared to be a logical move, but this has not proved to be the case. The Observer has suffered several changes of editor, and there has also been internal conflict with the Guardian. It is possible that the Observer has lost readers merely because it is too earnest. When dealing with relatively unimportant matters, it lacks the conviction of the Guardian.
