A shot in the arm for addicts

Article Abstract:

Naltrexone, a molecule which sits on the opiate receptors, prevents access by heroin molecules, therefore preventing addicts from feeling the effects of heroin, even if consumed in large quantities. At present, it must be taken every two or three days, but some addicts are now pressing for a long-acting injection or implant, thus relieving them of the pressure of having to decide frequently whether they should take heroin or not. However, nothing of this kind is yet available, even though there is clearly an urgent need.

The muddle over mental illness

Article Abstract:

The governments plans to replace large institutions for mental illness and provide psychiatric care in the community do not ensure adequate beds for acutely ill schizophrenics nor do they include any system to organise patient care. Medical insurance companies do not cover recurring illnesses or out-patient treatment. Agencies involved in community care do not communicate with each other. Information is hard to obtain and carers are not approached about a patient's history.

French if they must, but Alsation at heart

Article Abstract:

The Alsace region, situated along France's north-eastern border with Germany, has a Germanic culture and its inhabitants speak a dialect of High German. Its towns and villages have a German appearance, and there are many Protestant churches. However, Alsatians do not want to be part of Germany, and a long history of conflict with both France and Germany has made the suspicious of both countries.
