A 'skunk' that smells sweet
Article Abstract:
Courtaulds have produced a new natural fibre called Tencel, which has been under development since 1982. It is a replacement for viscose since its market share has dropped to 6% in 1992. Tencel is as soft and light as silk but hardier and is not damaged by water. A new production plant has been built in Mobile, Alabama costing 50 million pounds sterling to produce 18,000 tonnes a year, mainly for clothing. Japanese, American, German and Italian companies are customers. Tencel is produced in an environmentally-friendly way, by dissolving cellulose fibres in amine oxide. This is removed and re-used while the fibres are extracted.

The fall of forensic science
Article Abstract:
Forensic science has become part of everyday life in the UK, with ordinary people being aware through the media of the role that this discipline can play in areas such as detecting criminals. Evidence produced by forensic science has a very strong status, and has traditionally very rarely been challenged. However, it is unclear how juries judge forensic evidence, and forensic scientists do not necessarily make good expert witnesses. It is now becoming increasingly common to question the role of forensic evidence in criminal cases.

2003: a space odyssey
Article Abstract:
Those involved with the International Space Station project seem determined to go ahead, despite significant costs and the difficulties experienced by the Mir space station. Indeed, the first component of the station will be launched from a site in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in Jun 1998. It will be necessary to make 45 assembly flights to put together the station's 100 components, with completion planned for 2003. Some observers believe that the costs of this project cannot really be justified.
