Aesthete who saw salvation in the stars

Article Abstract:

Media attention first turned to Marshall Herff Applewhite, who committed suicide recently along with 38 members of his Heaven's Gate cult, in the mid-1970s. At that time, he took some people from a small town in Oregon to meet a UFO in eastern Colorado. He was able to convince cult members that by committing suicide they were abandoning their earthly life for a better one. He had a magnetic personality, and particularly appealed to people who believed in UFOs.

Bring on the soccer moms

Article Abstract:

White suburban women in the US are gradually realising that they are becoming an important political force. However, they are now being targeted president Bill Clinton with initiatives such as new provisions for family leave from work and tax breaks for college fees.

Staged fights, betting guards, gunfire and death for the gladiators

Article Abstract:

An FBI investigation has revealed that known enemies among inmates at Corcoran State Prison in California were forced by guards to fight each other. The guards regarded this as entertainment, and would bet on the outcome. Prisoners who refused to stop fighting were sometimes shot dead. This comes at a time when some people are calling for stricter treatment of prisoners in US jails.
