Allan Macartney

Article Abstract:

Allan Macartney was a Scottish politician who was also a member of the European parliament who favored a strong, democratic Europe. He was a Christian and taught for the Open University, as well as being deputy head of the Scottish National Party. He favored nationalism, but of a tolerant variety, and was opposed to exclusiveness on grounds of ethnicity. Self-determination was a key belief of his, and his views on this were developed from early work in Africa, where his father was a missionary.

Don Dunstan

Article Abstract:

Politician Donald Dunstan was born in Fiji. He attended St Peter's College in Adelaide, Australia, and then studied law at the University of Adelaide. He stood for state parliament as a Labor Party candidate at the age of 26, gaining the constituency of Norwood in Adelaide. He became Labor Party leader in 1967, and was extremely influential in changing the nature of Australian politics. Following two military coups in Fiji in 1987, he became Pres of the Movement for Democracy in Fiji.

Lance Barnard

Article Abstract:

Lance Barnard was deputy prime minister of Australia in 1972 when the Labor party had won power for the first time since 1949. Barnard and Gough Whitlam, the prime minister, carried out a number of reforms after dividing the ministries between them. The moves included the end of conscription into Australia's armed forces. Barnard held the seat of Bass from 1954 for 21 years. He was defense minister from 1972 to 1975 and was also Australian ambassador in Norway, Finland and Sweden.
