An iron maiden in the village of lies
Article Abstract:
Dazhai received considerable publicity as a model Mao village during China's Cultural Revolution. It received many visits from Red Guards, and local people studied the thoughts of Mao extremely thoroughly. Its most famous resident was Guo Fenglian, head of the village's 'iron maiden brigade.' It eventually emerged that the village's apparent achievements were no more than a myth, and it became an embarrassment to a country moving towards new economic reforms. It is now run down and poor, and Guo Fenglian has become a successful businesswoman.

New China hits the buffers of reality
Article Abstract:
The 400 million pounds sterling Peking West Railway Station, which opened in Jan 1996, is more than 300 feet high and covers 580,000 square yards. However, it has only six platforms and sees fewer than 30 train departures a day. China's railway network is far too small to meet demand, especially as the number of migrant workers continues to rise rapidly. The government now plans to invest heavily in laying 6,250 miles of track and purchasing rolling stock.
