Art Farmer
Article Abstract:
Trumpet and flugelhorn player and bandleader Art Farmer began studying the trumpet at school. He began working with bands in Los Angeles, CA, at the age of 16, and in 1946 joined the band led by drummer Johnny Otis. He made his first records in 1948. He subsequently settled in New York, NY, and in 1954 formed a group with altoist Gigi Gryce. He recorded with an all star band assembled by Quincy Jones in 1956, and in 1958 took Chet Baker's place in Gerry Mulligan's quartet.

Barrett Deems
Article Abstract:
Drummer and bandleader Barrett Deems led his own bands in Chicago, IL, in the 1920s and 1930s. He was noticed by jazz violinist Joe Venuti, and joined Venuti's band in 1937, remaining there until 1944. He worked for Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman, and then in 1948 joined Red Norvo. Following a visit to Europe, he left the big-band field to work in the Dixieland group led by cornettist Muggsy Spanier.
