Attack or defence?
Article Abstract:
Stock markets are very volatile at present, and this is forcing investors to make a sharp distinction between a defensive approach, which will bring losses if the market rises sharply, and an aggressive approach, which will bring losses if the market falls. Those choosing a defensive portfolio must either invest fully in very cautious investments, or divide their portfolio between very cautious, cautious and medium risk investments. An aggressive portfolio may include unit and investment trusts in Japan and the Far East and UK high income and smaller company funds.

Guaranteed - smaller profits than you think
Article Abstract:
Guaranteed equity investment products have become increasingly popular in the UK since the late 1980s, and they now attract up to 100 million pounds sterling each month. Insurance companies offering onshore and offshore growth bonds account for the largest part of the market. Guaranteed products usually offer growth based on exposure to stock market indices but also use options to balance out the risk. It is important to be aware that guaranteed products do not offer the potential for growth available from unit or investment trusts.

Should you place your money on Asia's wheel of fortune?
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in south-east Asia has made assets in the region appear very cheap to investors. However, it is important to realize that there are likely to be difficulties in the region for some time to come, so investments there must be viewed as a long-term commitment. Investors should distinguish between countries that are already adapting to the new economic conditions, such as Singapore and Taiwan, and those that are still trying to ignore the problems. Tiger funds are available as unit or investment trusts.
