Many children who were born HIV-positive have defied the predictions of medical experts by surviving into their teenage years. New combination drug therapies are now giving these teenagers hope for the future. They tend to keep their condition a secret, but they gain support through organizations such as Teen Spirit. As the first generation of children infected with the HIV virus at birth grow up, they present society with new problems and new breakthroughs.

Tracey Emin can be regarded as coming at the end of a long tradition of female artists who have obtained esteem through public self-flagellation. She is aware that, if she manages to overcome her misery, she will no longer attract so much attention. It seems that she has lost the ability to separate herself from her art, and the way in which she has chosen to express herself makes it hard for her to gain real respect.
