Article Abstract:

The UK government is facing significant challenges as it seeks to reform student finance. The most recent plan was a graduate tax, but this now seems to have been abandoned and the government is considering alternatives, including extending grants for students who require them and charging students a real rate of interest on loans.

Britain's missing students: they'd love to go to university but they just can't face the debts

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for young people leaving formal education to carefully consider whether they wish to take on the financial burden of university study. Some feel that they do not wish to make excessive financial demands on their parents, and are carefully choosing university courses in towns where accommodation and other expenses are not too high. Others are considering working for a year to earn money to fund their university education.
