Beware the intolerant certainties of European liberals

Article Abstract:

The Runnymede Trust has issued a report on Islamophobia which notes that Islam is growing rapidly world wide, and that there is discrimination against Muslims in the United Kingdom due to their faith. Islam is hetergenous and has been linked to a move toward democracy in some countries such as Pakistan. Women are said to be oppressed under Islam, yet Muslim women are concerned that women in non-Muslim societies are not always treated with respect. The Runnymede report argues that discrimination should be outlawed and that the state should support Islamic schools as well as those from other denominations.

Don't tell me to stay home and watch World Cup football on the telly

Article Abstract:

Modern technology has made it possible for ordinary people to witness most significant international events from the comfort of their own home. However, many people still like to feel part of a crowd from time to time. In a crowd, people can be completely anonymous and yet feel close to others. Shared experience seems to have become very important to many ordinary Britons, as reflected in the fact that large numbers of people travelled to London, England, in 1997 for the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, and in the great demand for tickets for the 1998 World Cup.
