New Statesman and Society was founded in 1913. Scallywag commenced publication in Dorset in 1991. A London version started in October 1991. Prime Minister John Major is suing both for libel but the articles discussed rumour and its effects in the abstract. New Statesman had a circulation of 92,000 in the 1960's but merged with New Society to solve financial problems in 1988. Circulation was 22,600 in 1992. Scallywag's circulation has reached 55,000 but the managers have no money.

'Why did they think we were criminals?' (Denese Mapp, who alleges assault by Metropolitan Police officers)
Article Abstract:
It is common for the Metropolitan Police to assume that black people are criminals, according to Denese Mapp. She called the police after having been threatened by two white men, but alleges that the police assaulted her and her two sons. Her sister was arrested for breach of the peace. She finds it very hard to accept that the police officers who treated her in this way still serve in one of the most racially mixed areas of London, England.

Refugees clung to driftwood to escape shipwreck
Article Abstract:
A shipwreck off the Indonesian island of Java killed 356 asylum-seekers. Survivors from the vessel, which was heading for Australia, clung to driftwood for 19 hours before being rescued. The refugees were mainly from Iraq and Afghanistan.
