Blair-bashing may lead to warmer embrace
Article Abstract:
Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown has so far been cautious about establishing closer links with the Labour party. This seems to have been the right strategy, with the Liberal Democrats now in a strong position as the second-largest party in local government. Some leading figures in both parties are sceptical about cooperation, so it would take extensive negotiation to reach any kind of agreement. Paddy Ashdown is aware that he is in a strong position, as the Labour party is likely to need his support, even if it wins a majority at the next general election.

Blair must risk more for his reward
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is widely forecast to win the next general election, but this is actually placing it in a difficult position in the post-Budget period, where little of interest is taking place. The party is constantly having to answer difficult questions about what it plans to do in office, while the Conservative party is not facing such scrutiny, as few commentators expect if to win a further term. Labour does not have the same capacity as the Conservatives to dominate the media, and does not benefit from direct access to the Civil Service.

Blair puts Labour on alert for election
Article Abstract:
The UK could see a general election before the end of 1995, according to Labour party leader Tony Blair. He has now put his party on alert for the possibility of an election, and is set to reorganise campaign duties. He also believes that the Conservative party could experience a leadership coup, with John Major being replaced by Michael Heseltine.
