Bright lights, big pity

Article Abstract:

The Bolshoi Ballet failed to attract an audience when it appeared recently in Las Vegas. Its visit, organized by ballet fan Ed Martin, encountered many difficulties, and there was considerable tension, both within the ballet company itself and between the ballet company and local technicians. The visit was not properly publicized, and potential spectators were also deterred by the fact that ticket prices were very high. This situation contrasts very strongly with the Bolshoi's visit to the US in the mid-1950s, when people very extremely keen to buy tickets.

Dances with words

Article Abstract:

It is fascinating to see how two bodies can solve the same problem in a different way, according to dancer Stephen Petronio. He often refers to seeing a movement in different contexts and layering those different views on top of each other to be seen as a single unit. He is also very interested in the working and reworking of single phrases and sequences. He has been influenced by many different sources, including Rudolf Nureyev and Steve Paxton.

What kind of fool am I?

Article Abstract:

Male dancer Tetsuya 'Teddy' Kumakawa first appeared at Covent Garden in 1989, at the age of 17. He has become very popular, performing particularly well in roles which require great speed and elevation. The fact that he is not very tall has worked in his favour, as his low centre of gravity gives him great poise and allows him to undertake manoeuvres which would be impossible for a taller dancer.
