Caste aside

Article Abstract:

India's Hijra class of castrated men who dress as women and perform at weddings seems to be a very strong reflection of the paradox of India, according to Zia Jaffrey, who has written a book about the Hijra tradition. Her work was generally welcomed in India, where it was felt that she had asked important questions. However, she found herself being attacked by gay Indians in the US, many of whom had been called Hijra while at school in Pakistan. She found it necessary to exercise great sensitivity when trying to gain information from the naturally suspicious Hijras.

You ask the questions

Article Abstract:

Feminist author and cultural critic Camille Paglia believes that some people find her frightening because she thinks for herself and does not seek approval. She regards arguments as pointless, believing that her consciousness and experience go beyond mere words. She continues to lead a quiet and private daily life, even though she became a celebrity suddenly at the age of 43. She is strongly in favour of free speech, but is aware as a teacher that consideration must always be given to appropriateness and context.

The trouble with blondes and birds

Article Abstract:

The glamorous image of a woman who toys with men is very attractive, according to Camille Paglia, who has recently published a monograph on Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film 'The Birds.' She dislikes the way Melanie, the film's main character, played by Tippi Hedren, becomes domesticated. She greatly admires the clothes Hedren wears in the film, and found out that Hitchcock had paid close attention to all details of the clothing. She strongly rejects the view that Hitchcock shamelessly exploited women.
