Doctor Who returns to Downing Street
Article Abstract:
The UK government has released few personal details about Norman Blackwell, the new head of prime minister John Major's policy unit. Blackwell himself has made considerable efforts to avoid publicity, but seems to be a class product of the meritocracy which was common in the 1960s. He has been involved with the Conservative party since his student days, and will now be responsible for setting up a new team of analysts to give John Major advice independent of departmental civil servants.

Many happy returns Miss Wright
Article Abstract:
Joan Wright, who is soon to celebrate her 96th birthday, has experienced at first hand the many changes which have taken place during the 20th century. She has lived through times of hardship, especially during wars, and times of happiness and relaxation. She was born into a relatively wealthy family, so did not take up formal employment when she left school, but has done a great deal of voluntary work. She is now having to face up to the infirmities which old age brings.

The truth about the Queen (but not her dogs)
Article Abstract:
Every Briton has a view about the Queen, whether negative or positive, according to historian Ben Pimlott, who has published a new biography of the Queen. This work goes beyond simple details of the life of the Queen, and in fact charts the history of a whole era. He believes that it is possible to write a biography of the Queen without necessarily being overly respectful and uncritical.
