Drawn from life
Article Abstract:
Some artists have a regular nine-to-five job. Storyboard artists draw scene plans and settings for films. Museum illustrators draw for exhibition catalogues and gallery labels, illustrating how objects are assembled. Courtroom artists sketch from memory based on notes taken during trials. Television news illustrators draw sketches of situations where no pictures exist or can be taken. Police artists reconstruct impressions of wanted criminals based on descriptions of witnesses and crime victims. Architecture artists create impressions of how buildings will look when completed.

Dipping beneath the surface
Article Abstract:
Dr Joyce Townsend of Tate Gallery, London, England's conservation department study of 50 of Turner's 300 paintings and 200 of his 20,000 watercolours discovered his obsession with finding new pigments. Dr Townsend used a stereo microscope to scan paintings' surfaces under different lighting. Analysis of the paint base showed how much Turner intermixed oils, emulsions and other media within a single composition.
