Dreaming of freedom and change

Article Abstract:

Ichiro Ozawa, 51, former secretary-general of the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party (LDP,) expedited the party split which led to elections on Jul 18, 1993, and established the Shinsei (Renewal) party. This ends a monopoly of power after 38 years. Change occurs from the top down. Politicians, corporate executives and academics believe parochial politics and unaccountable bureaucracy should be discontinued and Japan should play a greater part in international affairs. US President Bill Clinton supports the movement for political change.

Rebels deliver fatal blow to old guard

Article Abstract:

Mr Tsutomu Hata, leader of a rebel group within the Liberal and Democratic Party (LDP), voted out the Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. The LDP was established in 1955 and remained in power for 38 years. Japan has the second largest economy in the world, but its government is elected by old-fashioned groups such as farmers. Mr Hata proposes a realignment combining more progressive politicians with moderate Socialists and some smaller parties, as did Mr Kanemaru before he was disgraced.

The land of rising expectations

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Liberal Democratic Party lost its absolute majority at the elections on Jul 18, 1993 after 38 years. Shin Kanemaru began the idea of change in 1988. He was raising funds to establish a new party when he was arrested in Mar 1993 for tax evasion. Ichiro Ozawa, 51, set up a reform group which voted for a no-confidence motion against the government. Revision of the electoral system will be the prime issue for the new government.
