Dublin, Grasmere, Haworth, Limerick...

Article Abstract:

The novel 'Angela's Ashes' by Frank McCourt depicts Limerick, Ireland, in the 1940s. The book has sold well in the US, so is likely to boost tourism to Limerick. There is disagreement in Limerick over the gloomy portrait of poverty painted in the book. Some citizens argue that it reflects the poverty of those times, and in any case is a work of literature rather than a social history. TB claimed many lives and poverty led many families to emigrate.

Gangland mocks as killers of a fearless journalist go free on Dublin streets

Article Abstract:

Irish police are believed to have identified the two men involved in the murder of investigative journalist Veronica Guerin. There has been close investigation of drug importing and tobacco smuggling associated with suspects for the murder, and 131 people have been arrested and questioned. However, the lack of forensic evidence connecting the suspects with the shooting means that it is unlikely that a successful prosecution will result.

Horse power on the streets of Dublin

Article Abstract:

Many residents of the poorest estates of Dublin, Ireland, keep ponies or horses on public land or in backyards. Controlling urban horses has now become a very sensitive political issue in the city, where there are growing concerns about horses straying or being badly treated. There are now plans for legislation which would require licensing and registration of all horses.
