'Chief nanny', or just someone who wants us to be healthy?

Article Abstract:

People will only follow advice on how to live more healthily if they feel engaged with that advice, according to UK Minister for Public Health Tessa Jowell. She rejects claims that the government is trying to dictate to ordinary people about how they should live. She believes that people expect the government to make clear statements about risks associated with eating certain foods, and that this involves giving people information, rather than telling them what they should do. She feels that there are circumstances in which the government should act proacatively.

Deadly lottery of cancer treatment

Article Abstract:

The death rate from breast cancer is almost 20% above the average in certain parts of the UK, while in other parts of the country it is almost 20% better than the average, according to figures included in the 1998 annual hospital league tables. The Cancer Research Campaign has reacted strongly to this finding, stating that inequity of care for breast cancer patients cannot be tolerated. Michael Dixon, consultant surgeon and head of the breast unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, points out that national death rates from breast cancer have been declining rapidly while cases of breast cancer have been rising.
