English wines to drink to
Article Abstract:
In 1992 English wine growers exceeded the 25,000 hectolitre limit at which EC regulations apply. The regulations forbid the planting of more vines except for quality wines, so hybrid grape varieties are excluded. UK vineyards need hardy varieties to cope with the climate. The English Vineyard Association seeks an amendment so that the restriction is not applied until an average of 2.5 million litres is produced over five years. Labelling is another contentious issue as different wording must be used for ordinary table wine and quality wine.

Writing off the keyboard
Article Abstract:
The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) takes over from the palmtop as no keyboard is needed. Messages handwritten on a touch-sensitive screen with a plastic pen arestored for re-display as text. Some PDAs will incorporate fax and some will have radio communications. Amstrad's Pen Pad and Apple Newton pen-based computer are among the first PDAs. These devices have to be trained to recognise the writer's alphabet in boxes, although the Newton is more advanced.
