Estonia seeks shelter from icy Eastern wind
Article Abstract:
There seems no immediate prospect of an improvement in relations between Estonia and Russia, according to Estonian president Lennart Meri. Russia claims that the human rights of ethnic Russians living in Estonia are being violated, and also believes that members of a volunteer defence force in Estonia have been selling arms to the IRA. Meri points out that the economic and political success which Estonia has enjoyed over recent years serves to undermine the image of the Russian leadership.

Danube area split over plan to dam river
Article Abstract:
Prague and Budapest agreed to dam the Danube in 1977 and 90% of the work was completed by 1992, but Hungary wants to abandon the project. It stopped working on the dam in 1989 because it decided the project would lead to polluted drinking water and flooding. Talks with EC representatives failed to produce a compromise. Slovaks believe the diversion of the Danube to the Gabcikovo hydro-electric power plant will bring economic benefits.

Minority fears nationalist upsurge in Slovakia
Article Abstract:
Hungarians in Slovakia are frightened by Slovak nationalism, which has reduced their rights. There are about 600,000 Hungarians living there. Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar has limited use of the Hungarian language and brought in policies that make non-Slovaks second-class citizens. Ethnic Hungarians seek autonomy in three southern Slovakia regions where they are in the majority. They want guarantees of rights in the constitution.
