It is believed that as many as 800 people died in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon in Washington, DC. The part of the building hit by the hijacked Boeing 757 continues to burn, and a section has collapsed.

Bonn deal hopes rise as talks hang in balance

Mixed signals are being received from the talks in Bonn, Germany, on the future of Afghanistan. Abdul Hadir, an ethnic Pashtun, has left the talks following differences with his delegation, and the sensitive issue of whether former Taliban members and their supporters should be part of a new administration must still be addressed. However, it is hoped that an agreement can be announced shortly.
