Filling the unforgiving minute
Article Abstract:
The radio programme Just A Minute has been running for 20 years and is still very popular. Members of the panel have to speak on a given topic for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition and can be challenged by another member of the panel on one of these three criteria. If the challenge is upheld the successful challenger continues to speak, subject to further challenges, for the remainder of the minute. The person speaking as the minute runs out wins a point. When long-time favourite panellist Kenneth Williams died, stopping the programme was considered but it was decided to continue using new young comedians.

Just shut up and listen
Article Abstract:
Ex-chairman of Granada TV David Plowright leads a bid for regional independent radio in north-west England, which models itself on US talk radio. He plans a station with listener participation, updating the Radio 4 format in the same way Classic FM modernises Radio 3. WABC, New York is a profitable talk radio station, but it does not believe in reasoned argument or balance. Rush Limbaugh opens his programme on WABC with a 15-minute, populist monologue and invites callers.
