The machine that watches you think
Article Abstract:
Superconducting quantum interference device (squid) is a minute device in a magnetometer, a tool which presents an image of a working brain. Director of the biomagnetism group at the Open University Dr Steven Swithenby believes squid will be invaluable for clinical research because all previous tools only examine structure not activity. Squids measure magnetic flux at ultra-low levels. A three-dimensional magnetic map of brain activity is assembled from 37 Squids attatched to the head and body.

How Brussels will make life a little sweeter
Article Abstract:
The artifical sweetener cyclamate was banned in food in the UK, Canada and the US in 1970 following fears that it could cause cancer. However, a European Union directive which will come into force at the end of 1995 will make it a legal food additive again in the UK, as it will allow sugar substitutes currently used in other European Union countries to be introduced into UK foods. There are now six intense sweeteners approved for consumption in the European Union.

Just add water and, look, no more toxic waste
Article Abstract:
Hazardous wastes and chemical weapons can be disposed of by dissolving in supercritical water, a very reactive fluid beyond 374C and 218 atmospheres pressure. The chemical engineering department, Imperial College, London, England and the National Engineering Laboratory at East Kilbride, Scotland are researching supercritical water's properties.
