First he took Manhattan

Article Abstract:

The Gagosian gallery in New York, NY, is staging a show of 13 paintings by British artist Howard Hodgkin. Most of the paintings have been sold already, but the show is still attracting great interest from collectors, celebrities and art critics. Paintings on show include 'Bamboo,' a rectangular oil painting on wood, and 'When in Rome,' an oval painting that pays homage to Roman baroque. Its swirling brushstrokes create a trompe l'oeil effect.

Restaurateur Aldo Berni arrived in the UK from Italy at the age of 16. He worked at his family's small chain of unlicensed restaurants during the second world war, but the business did not really start to expand until 1954, when he and his brother purchased the Rummer Inn in Bristol, England. The Berni chain eventually covered 147 hotels and restaurants, and was sold to Grand Metropolitan for 14.5 million pounds sterling in 1970.
