Flirting with the enemy

Article Abstract:

Documents released by the UK government reveal that British diplomats in Cairo, Egypt, had hidden contacts with Arab cleric Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Israel. It appears that the diplomats, despairing at the situation in Palestine, believed that the Mufti could influence the Arabs to hold back until the UK had retreated from the area. In contrast, politicians in the UK had been calling for Haj Amin to face war crimes charges, as he had encouraged the Nazis to send the Jews to countries where they would be under active control.

Relatives let into Israelis' jail of death

Article Abstract:

International attention has been focusing for some time on the notorious Khiam prison in southern Lebanon, where prisoners are kept in very poor conditions, often in underground cells. The prison houses around 260 Lebanese people, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has until recently been refused access to them. However, it is now likely that the ICRC will be able to carry out inspections, investigating reports from inmates that Lebanese militiamen paid and armed by Israelis have been carrying out electrical torture.

Amnesty condemns Israelis and Palestinians for rights abuses

Article Abstract:

Human rights abuses are widespread in Israel and the West Bank, according to a report from Amnesty International. There has been a sharp rise in the number of Israeli civilians killed by armed Palestinian groups since the Oslo Agreement in 1993, while Israel routinely tortures people held in new prisons built in West Bank areas still under occupation. Arbitrary arrests by the Palestinian authority have been followed by extremely unfair trials, while Israel has been responsible for extrajudicial killings.
