Flying with Tony, slaving with Joe
Article Abstract:
Ordinary people in the UK have very little interest in politics, according to author Robert Harris. He gained privileged access to the highest levels of the Labour party in the run-up to the general election in May 1997, but hopes that his writing about the party was not biased in any way. He is now shifting his attention away from politics, and is focusing on a third novel, which he hopes to complete by the end of 1997. This work is about Stalin, reflecting the strong interest which Harris has in power and its effect on different people.

Stepping out with a bright-eyed sprite
Article Abstract:
Legal and technical advances have improved the life of the blind, but there are still basic prejudices against blind people, according to poet, teacher and writer Stephen Kuusisto, who is himself blind. He is keen to demystify and defuse the fear that is frequently associated with blindness. He feels that he has greatly benefited from the fact that his parents kept him in mainstream education, even though this meant that he gained no professional orientation skills or literacy in Braille.

The code breaker
Article Abstract:
Robert Harris' novel 'Fatherland,' which deals with a Europe after victory by Hitler, has been extremely successful, selling 4 million copies. He has always been obsessed by war, and his background in journalism has ensured that his novels contain extensive factual detail. His new novel, 'Enigma,' is seen partly as a test of whether he can repeat this success.
