Decline and fall of the Yeltsin empire
Article Abstract:
Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, may have decided to leave his post due to health problems and the difficulties of governing Russia. He has had to reappoint a prime minister that many dislike, Viktor Chernomyrdin, and may be criticised for giving in to pressure from oligarchs. Yeltsin is unpredictable and has sacked Anatoly Chubais three times from his financial troubleshooter role. There are a number of Russians who hope that Yeltsin will leave the political stage.

Grachev fired as Yeltsin buys Lebed support
Article Abstract:
Russian president Boris Yeltsin has denied that his decision to dismiss unpopular defence minister Pavel Grachev and to appoint Alexander Lebed, who came third in the first round of the presidential election, as secretary of the security council and national security adviser was motivated by campaign considerations. The appointment of Lebed will have a negative impact on Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov, who came second in the first round.
