Chechnya puts paid to Clinton's 'win-winner.' (Chechnya war cast shadow over US-Russian summit)

Article Abstract:

The attack by Russian helicopters on a Chechen village, despite claims by Russian president Boris Yeltsin that the fighting in Chechnya had ceased, has cast a shadow over the US-Russian summit. President Bill Clinton had earlier reported positive results from his meeting with Boris Yeltsin, with russia making partial concessions on the sale of nuclear technology to Iran. The US government is now concerned that Yeltsin may be trying to mislead or is being misled himself.

Victories for Clinton fade in fog of words

Article Abstract:

The summit meeting between president Bill Clinton and Russian president Boris Yeltsin has been officially hailed as a success, but there were in fact few positive achievements. Public differences of opinion were avoided, but Russia only made vague promises on issues which should have been resolved some time ago. Russia appears unwilling to commit itself to ending the war in Chechnya, and is opposed to the expansion of Nato into Russia's former satellites.
