Freshfields seeks way out of partnership pitfalls

Rapid changes already taking place in the financial services industry will force lawyers in the City of London to accept that traditional partnership agreements will have to be abandoned, according to Anthony Salz, new senior partner at City law firm Freshfields. Unlimited personal liability is no longer appropriate in a culture where law firms are trying to establish global operations. The concern is now looking at how it can set up a reasonable level of liability as it becomes more involved in risky international financial deals.

General Motors Eisenach plant in eastern Germany is a model of Japanese efficiency. Its lean management, labour conditions and production set an example to western German, Spanish, Belgian and British plants. Eisenach makes and Opel Astra or Corsa in just over 18 hours, compared to over 25 in the Bochum plant in western Germany. Each car has an average of six defects compared with 20 at Bochum. The factory cost over 1 billion deutshmarks and will have 2,000 workers producing 150,000 cars.
