Why it's worth becoming familiar with Footsie

Article Abstract:

The performance of the stock market in London, England, is widely seen as being reflected in the Financial Times/Stock Exchange 100 index (Footsie), which covers the top 100 shares quoted on the market. The companies concerned are chosen by their market capitalization, and represent just over 70% of the overall market value of UK shares. Changes to the constituent list of members of the Footsie are kept to a minimum, with a company generally only being removed if it has gone below 110 in its market value ranking.

Wall Street moves to evening trading

Article Abstract:

Wall Street is to change its traditional opening hours of 9.30 am to 4 pm and open in the evening, a move which could be seen as part of a wider process of globalising markets. Evening sessions could start in late 1999. There is some anxiety about the problems involved such as the extra cost to smaller brokers of staying open longer. There is also concern that prices could become very volatile when trading is light. Many investors want to trade after they return to work, in the evening.
