UK: BA PLANS NEW EFFICIENCY INITIATIVE
Article Abstract:
British Airways (BA) aims to cut costs by an additional GB[pound] 600mn in a new efficiency initiative which is expected to include a reduction of around 10% in the airline's 65,000-strong workforce by end-2003. BA chief executive, Bob Ayling, revealed that efficiency savings of GB[pound] 1bn had been attained earlier than expected. He noted that this latest efficiency campaign would focus on product development, rather than the rationalisation and outsourcing undertaken previously. BA aims to cut capacity over the coming three years by 13% by increasing business class seating and reducing economy class cabins, effectively offering 7mn fewer seats per year. Under investments also valued at GB[pound] 600mn, BA will launch World Traveller Plus, a new fourth class, and provide beds in business class.

GERMANY: GO UPSET OVER LUFTHANSA'S ACTIONS
Article Abstract:
British Airways' Go unit will allege that Lufthansa engaged in unfair competition in prices to squeeze it out of the market for flights to Munich in a submission to the European Commission on 29 February 2000. Go will suspend its services from Stansted in the UK to the German airport on 25 March 2000, saying that shortly after Lufthansa will increase its cheapest fare on this route to GB[pound] 129 from GB[pound] 58 return. Lufthansa believes it is within its rights to protect its home market, but Go believes that the consumer will suffer from such anti-competitive practices.
