Gazumping our way back to greatness

Article Abstract:

A revival of house purchasing is considered a symbol of improvement in the national economy. The British are alone in their belief in the advantages of property ownership. Home ownership has increased from 30% in 1945 to 70% in 1990. The property collapse after 1988 left the middle classes with negative equity and the working classes discouraged from ever buying again. There will be less people in the first time buyers age group in the 1990's. The property market is likely to stabilise.

Selling Britain by the pound

Article Abstract:

The value of sterling has declined continuously over recent decades, and British people travelling abroad are now shocked at how little foreign currency they can buy for their pound sterling. This decline reflects the general decline of the UK as a nation. The government continues to claim that the economy is recovering, but this is not the experience of ordinary people, who feel that they are now second-class citizens in the world order.

After the end of history, what next?

Article Abstract:

Francis Fukuyama has become one of the most influential modern thinkers since the publication of his short essay 'The End of History' in 1989, and his views on world political and economic conditions are widely respected. He revived the Hegelian view that there is a direction to history, and argued that there is a constant move towards greater technological capability. He believes that this has led to capitalism and liberal democracy.
