Germany's engine-room grinds towards collapse
Article Abstract:
Machine-tool producers are deeply affected by the recession and Japan has ousted Germany as top producer. Production fell 16% in 1992 in the 300 German companies which employ 90,000. Turnover fell from DM16 billion to DM13.5 billion (5.8 billion pounds sterling) in 1992. The Eastern market has disappeared. About one-third of machine-tool producers intend to operate short-time working. Germany is an expensive place to produce standard machine tools. Cheaper Asian products restrict the market for German series machines.

German pay round gives Tories jitters
Article Abstract:
The effect of German pay settlements on the country's interest rates is an indicator of possible movements in the British interest rates. The recession will probably keep German wage settlements below 10%. If they are no higher than 5%, the Bundesbank will not raise interest rates again. This would control inflation and achieve a 2% growth in Germany's Gross National Product for 1992, signalling other European countries to also reduce their interest rates.

Led by wise men
Article Abstract:
The Sahara desert in north Africa is crossed by five main 'ergs,' or veins. These include the Great Eastern Erg, which runs in an arc across Algeria and Tunisia, also touching Libya. It is possible to choose from a wide range of trekking tours in the Sahara, some lasting only one week and others lasting up to five weeks. A trip through the Great Eastern Erg need not be too strenuous, and offers many different types of scenery.
