Gilbert and Sullivan are on my little list, and they never will be missed

Article Abstract:

Some MPs have expressed strong opposition to the decision by the UK Arts Council to refuse funding for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which has become well known for its productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operas. They feel that the Arts Council is too highbrow, not wishing to be associated with operas that are populist and light-hearted. It is possible to argue that the Arts Council is right to refuse funding for a company with such a narrow focus. The company closed for six years from 1982, and its absence was not a loss to UK society.

Spin doctors are like spies - not very important, really

Article Abstract:

It can be argued that there are substantial similarities between spies and spin-doctors. Most importantly, their significance has been greatly exaggerated. The intelligence agencies have always had a very large vested interest in promoting the vital nature of their own work. Similarly, great significance is given to very small amounts of information released by spin-doctors. It is important to realize that a country's fortunes are not determined by the activities of spies and spin-doctors.

I'll let you into a little secret about all those spies
