Going for promotion
Article Abstract:
UK newspapers are no longer competing fiercely by cutting their cover price, but are still clashing in other areas. They are now turning their attentions to promotions such as free videos, and are also running poster, television and cinema advertisements. A number of newspapers continue to run at a loss, but only one, Today, has actually been forced to shut down. Some observers believe that newspapers will actually lose more money by investing heavily in marketing than they did by reducing their cover prices.

Bloomberg has his sights set on overtaking arch-rival Reuters
Article Abstract:
An unusual management approach has allowed Bloomberg to expand rapidly, and the company is set to take over the second position in the financial information market in 1997, according to Michael Bloomberg. He believes that the company can make up the gap which exists between it and Reuters, although it faces many challenges. These include the launch of Bloomberg Television into new markets. This will be available in the UK at the end of 1997 as part of the digital satellite network to be launched by BSkyB.
