How safe are our reactions?
Article Abstract:
Reactions to the accident at Nuclear Electric's Wylfa power plant have highlighted the illogical nature of human attitude to risk. Some observers have used the accident to fuel the argument that the planned privatisation of the nuclear power industry will bring greater conflict between safety and profit, while others have argued that nuclear power plants are unsafe and should be shut down. In fact, the accident has shown that nuclear technology is very safe, as the reactor was shut down only after a nine-hour delay and still no damage was done.

Can we still afford holidays?
Article Abstract:
Workers in Europe often have five or six weeks of paid holiday every year. This is a great deal by the standards of countries elsewhere in the world, where two weeks is more normal. Some observers feel that Europe may not be able to afford to allow this situation to continue for much longer. Allowing European workers to take more holidays than their counterparts in other parts of the world will eventually have the effect of lowering living standards in Europe and reducing European competitiveness.

Germany marks time as the dollar finds its level
Article Abstract:
The German mark has risen dramatically over the last year, and this trend has been one of the main causes of the recession which the country is currently experiencing. It is now starting to fall again, but still has a long way to go. It is against this background that analysts are considering the future of the key currency relationship between the German mark, the dollar and the yen. Analysts now expected the currencies to continue to correct.
