Smaller companies are neglected in a market that adores the top 100 firms

Article Abstract:

Most investment activity in the UK focuses on the companies in the FTSE Index of the Top 100 companies. Companies which seem close to entering this index attract a lot of interest from investors, while those which seem likely to leave the index lose investors. The dominance of the leading 100 companies is also having a negative impact on the UK's 250 second-tier companies, which are in danger of losing favour with investors. These companies may also be badly affected by changes resulting from Budget measures relating to the taxation of dividends for pension funds.

How to feather your own pensions nest

Article Abstract:

The self-invested personal pension is becoming an increasingly popular option, particularly appealing to people who wish to make their own investment decisions. It is also possible to allow a professional investment manager to make the appropriate decisions. The investment strategy can be tailored to an individual's particular needs and goals, and a more risk-averse strategy can be adopted as the person approaches retirement, thus making it unnecessary to cash in when market conditions are not favourable.

Speculating on the cheap

Article Abstract:

It is very likely that further consolidation will take place in the UK life assurance industry. For this reason, policyholders may find it worthwhile to hold as many shares as possible. However, life assurance may face difficult times under a future Labour government, with investment returns likely to be restricted. It is probable that it will not be easy to sell life assurance products, and life assurance companies will find it expensive to comply with regulations.
