Green form scheme runs through red light

Article Abstract:

The British Autumn Statement drastically reduced legal aid, affecting people on low incomes. The means-tested green form system which permits initial legal advice will be ended. In 1991 over half of these were for matrimonial or family affairs. Free advice will also be available to fewer people. The Legal Aid Practitioners Group expect to undertake more unpaid work. Some firms will introduce a special low rate for former green form clients. Cases may be settled with a more confrontational approach.

The problem of democracy

Article Abstract:

The UK Law Society has become democratic since Martin Mears, the previous president, took office in 1995. Ballots were not the norm prior to his election, but his presidency gave the Society a boost, and there have since then been numerous examples of a change in attitude. In the past rules were ignored, but dissatisfied lawyers are making sure they know about rules and are ready to act on them. Under Tony Girling, the new President, the surfeit of democracy will have to be diplomatically tackled.
