Hastings' battle to raise the Standard

Article Abstract:

The Evening Standard, London's evening newspaper, saw circulation fall by more than 6% in Dec 1995 to only 433,000, with sales down by 2.4% in the six months to the end of 1995. This comes at a time when the circulation market as a whole is rising and when the newspaper faces no competition. This has prompted moves to bring in Max Hastings to revive its fortunes. He has already been successful at the Daily Telegraph, and is now meeting with reporters and executives at the Evening Standard to discuss strategy.

Decision time for Pearson

Article Abstract:

There is strong speculation that there will be a change in strategy at media and information concern Pearson, which has interests including Thames Television and Penguin Books. The company has a new management team under chief executive Marjorie Scardino, who is now under strong pressure to give some indication as to what the company will look like after the anticipated restructuring. It is strange that the company is attracting so much interest, given that its performance in 1996 was rather patchy.
