Theatre director Patrice Chereau has always attracted controversy, gaining a reputation for productions which were strongly influenced by the Berliner Ensemble and Georgio Strehler's Piccolo Teatro. However, he has made a valuable contribution to building the modern French theatre repertoire, and forged close links with dramatist Bernard Marie Koltes. He is now planning to concentrate on film.
