Here comes the Clarke boom, with all its grief

Article Abstract:

It seems likely that the UK economy will enter a boom period shortly. There will be considerable difficulties for the party which wins the next general election when this period comes to a sudden end. Both the Labour and the Conservative parties will have to make very difficult economic decisions if they are in power, and will only be able to stand a chance of winning the following general election if voters are prepared to overlook several years of economic hardship.

The need for a faster growth strategy

Article Abstract:

It is now generally believed that chancellor Kenneth Clarke will soon announce a small interest rate cut, despite Bank of England concerns about the possible impact on inflation. Small adjustments to interest rates do not in fact make much difference to economic performance, and it is much more important to focus on ensuring that the long-term trend of inflation continues to be down. The UK government should now be looking at ways of speeding up economic growth.

Classic mid-cycle pause holds dangers for Clarke

Article Abstract:

UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke faces many challenges as the economy enters a mid-cycle pause. Some observers have expressed fears that he will be tempted to make too many concessions in the forthcoming Budget, thus moving the economy in the wrong direction. However, others feel that the main problem may be with monetary policy, where changes take a long time to have visible results.
