How a job they called glamorous ruined my life: the undercover detective's tale

Article Abstract:

Undercover police officers can often feel very isolated from ordinary policing, according to Detective Constable David Burton, who began working undercover with Greater Manchester Police in 1990. He initially had to pretend to be an armed robber in order to infiltrate gangs of football hooligans, and then played the part of a drug dealer. He felt that he was being shunned by society, and even became isolated from his own family.
