IRA prisoners will leave Britain next month

Article Abstract:

It is believed that the UK has approved the transfer of seven IRA prisoners from jails in the UK to jails in Ireland. This is likely to take place in early 1998. The move comes at a time when around 160 prisoners, including republicans and loyalists, have been released for 10 days over Christmas 1997. Agreement has already been reached on the transfer of some prisoners to Northern Ireland, but republicans are seeking to accelerate progress on the prison issue. They are calling for the early release of all paramilitary prisoners.

Taming of the Bogside hawk

Article Abstract:

Martin McGuinness has been seen as personifying the leadership of the IRA for almost 25 years. He has spoken out very strongly against the British presence in Ireland, and has been the main militarist and negotiator for the IRA. It is unlikely that the IRA would have agreed to the current ceasefire if he had not given it his full support. He has now become the first IRA representative to meet a British government minister for 23 years.
