Iranian law blamed as girl killed by drug-addict father
Article Abstract:
There has been extensive media coverage in Iran of the death of nine-year-old Arian Golshani. She was handed over to the custody of her father, a drug addict who had already been convicted of illicit relationships with other women, following the divorce of her parents and her mother's remarriage. She was given very little to eat, and was therefore very frail when attacked by the 12-year-old son of her father's second wife. The Iranian parliament has responded to the case by passing a law giving custody of children to relatives or orphanages if their parents are not in a position to care for them.

Clerics start to lose their grip in Iran
Article Abstract:
It is possible that Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has accumulated sufficient support among the Iranian army and Revolutionary Guards to ensure that Iran remains permanently out of the control of its conservative clerics. Khatami seems to be taking a conciliatory line, seeking a peaceful settlement of the Afghanistan conflict and stating that his government will not attempt to implement the fatwa against Salman Rushdie. However, the battle between Khatami's leaders and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's spiritual leader, continues in the press.

The Iranian political football is passed to the adults
Article Abstract:
Few signs remain in Iran of Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic revolution. The revolution temporarily made Iran into a nation of children, with Khomeini emphasizing the need for a pure and perfect society made up of people with child-like innocence and obedience. Iranian society is now becoming more mature, with clerics and intellectuals gaining the courage to question the divine right of Ayatollahs. President Khatami won his position in a fair election, and retains the support of ordinary people.
